Podcast 76: Holiday Movie Night w/ my sister Sarah!

Hello hello, and welcome to Episode 76 of Life On the Brink!

Well, you know what they say: tis the season for cozy movie nights. Christmas movies are one of the many delights of the season, and this month is just so perfect for impromptu movie nights with friends and family. So you know it’s only proper that we have an official Holiday Movie Night episode, featuring none other than my sister Sarah!

Today we’re talking all about our favorite Christmas movies, along with some unpopular opinions and guilty pleasure movies, and some fun themed holiday parties.

Brother-in-law Christian, Sarah, me, and Josh this Christmas.

If you haven’t yet enjoyed our previous movie chats, feel free to check out our seasonal movie night series, as well as last year’s Spooky Movie Night. Sarah and I have quite a bit in common, mostly that we agree on a lot of our favorite movies and that we love throwing a party, so we always have a ton of fun when we have these chats.

What’s in our teacups? David’s Tea’s Sleigh Ride tea, from their holiday pack (my love of the season). Sarah has coffee.

As always, I’m leaving any relevant links below, but the heart of this conversation is in the audio, so head to 2:43 of the audio player above or read the full transcript here.

Top Three Christmas Movies:

We agreed on two of our three, A Christmas Carol (2009) and Miracle on 34th Street (1947). They’re just that good.

Sarah’s pick: Little Women (1994)

My pick: It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

We also discussed the greatness of the Charlie Brown Christmas Special, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and White Christmas.

Guilty Pleasure Holiday Movies:

Sarah’s picks: A Christmas Kiss (2011) and the holiday Barbie movies we grew up with (the Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol, etc.)

My picks: The Santa Clause 3: the Escape Clause

Unpopular Opinions?

Sarah: The Santa Clause 2 and 3 are so superior to the first film.

Me: 1. The Sound of Music is not a Christmas movie, and 2. Kevin McAllister is a menace.

PARTY TIME! Little ideas to turn a classic movie into a whole themed party:

1. Elf

-menu: classic spaghetti (rather than Buddy’s creation) and sugar cookies with coffee

-activity: paper chains and snowflakes

2. Little Women:

-menu: a Christmas brunch with sweet bread and sausage and (of course) oranges

-activity: gift wrapping, popcorn garlands, dried orange slice ornaments

3. Beauty and the Beast: an Enchanted Christmas:

-menu: Bûche De Noël and LOTS of tea

-activity: learning about Christmas traditions around the world, and again TEA

4. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (and the other claymations):

-menu: hot cocoa, Christmas cookies

-activity: decorating gingerbread houses/people, probably great for kids too

5. The Holiday: VERY excited about this one, it’s basically a coursed menu.

-start with charcuterie and wine

-fettucine alfredo for the main (they eat it on Christmas Eve)

-for dessert, either a mocha milkshake (for the frappuccinos in Blockbuster) or hot chocolate (with baby marshmallows)

And there you go! I hope our conversation shared a laugh or two, or maybe inspired you to make your next movie night into an event! Even if it's with people you see all the time, adding a bit of planning to a simple gathering makes it all the more magical.

Happy movie night!

She is so precious.

Sarah’s Little Joy: Firstly, she's been enjoying watching the Holiday British Baking Show episodes with me (it's been an ongoing tradition this Christmas season), but she also shared her immense relief that new cat, Lottie, has not been climbing the Christmas tree. She's new to the house and is still a kitten, and my sister and brother-in-law have a 12 foot tree! Sometimes she paws at the lower ornaments or plays with the tree skirt, but she's left the tree alone. Yay!

What She’s Listening To: The classic Christmas album by Celtic Woman. For Sarah's birthday last month, the rest of us siblings got her tickets to their Christmas show in a few weeks, so she's getting mentally ready to hear this beautiful music live.

Thank you so much for listening! Let me know if you give any of these parties a try, or find me over on Instagram to reach out. I'll be back with 2 more episodes this year, so enjoy your Christmas season!
