Hello hello, and welcome to Episode 123 of Life On the Brink!
I’m calling this episode a Part 2 as it sort of relates to one of the most popular episodes of the podcast: Episode 80 called “Taking Care of Yourself When You Feel Overwhelmed, Anxious or Burnt Out.” This is in a similar vein, but personally comes from a different headspace. Whereas Part 1 took place during a huge time of transition when I was moving into a new home, these days I’m in the midst of my first year of motherhood and am working through new stresses and, at times, sadness.
One of the pastors at my church said something last week that has stuck with me. She was speaking specifically about enduring pain and suffering and sadness:
“Perhaps if we can be more honest, we can become more human. And perhaps if we can become more human, we make room for God to be God in our lives, and we give the people around us permission to be more human.”
And I'm really identifying with that.

What’s in my teacup? A homemade orange cardamom latte, using the amazing Seville Orange coffee beans from Rostov's in Richmond.
I am in no way here to advise anyone as to the correct course of action to take when it comes to handling depression or anxiety. For me it looks like consistently reaching out to those I love and trust, seeking out a counselor, and trying to practice a ton of self-compassion. For you, it may look quite different, or for a longer or shorter stretch of time; I would only suggest you reach out to a loved one or to your doctor. Rather, hope that this episode will provide sweet ideas for the moments when you do want to feel better or would like something fun or creative to look forward to.
Sometimes you need to sit with your sadness, but for the times when you want to cheer up, in this episode I'm simply sharing the things that have been comforting to me.

This Week’s Little Joy: “The Empress” on Netflix. I’m almost through Season One and have been loving it. And what’s perhaps even better: it’s in German so I can’t multitask when I watch it because I’m reading subtitles. It means I can only do one thing at a time and enjoy the show.
What I’m Listening To: I recently looked up one of my favorite modern jazz bands, The Hot Sardines, and realized they put out a new album in 2023: “C’est la Vie (A Jazz Soundtrack).” It’s very true to their style and contains tunes in both English and French. Definitely worth a listen!
Thank you so much for listening! Feel free to leave a comment, or head to Apple Podcasts to leave a star rating or review. If you have any suggestions for future episodes, send an email in the contact form on this site. I’d love to hear from you, and I'll be back next month!
